Warren police uncover $1.2 million worth of marijuana
WARREN, Mich. (AP) -- A suspicious business owner and the police department's canine unit helped uncover 1,200 pounds of marijuana destined for Canada worth about $1.2 million.
Narcotics officers and federal agents found the marijuana, which was packaged in bricks weighing nearly 1 pound each and stuffed inside beams of a semi-tractor trailer.
"It's part of a very sophisticated operation," Warren Detective Lt. Mark Mazzone told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens on Wednesday.
The bust was one of the largest of its kind in the city.
Police said a woman phoned a trucking firm on Nov. 24, asking the company if it would haul the trailer to Canada. Police said the woman claimed the company she worked for had sold the trailer but needed it driven to Scarborough, Ontario.
When the owner, whose identity wasn't released, saw the trailer on his lot he told her his company does not accept such jobs. He suspected it was stolen and called police.
Police were trying to find the woman. No arrests have been made in the case.
Marijuana is the most frequently used illegal drug in the United States. Nearly 69 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once.
Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, one of nearly 400 chemicals in a hemp plant, accounts for most of marijuana's psychoactive, or mind-altering, effects. The strength of the drug is determined by the amount of THC it contains.
